The Hypocritical God: When the Divine Breaks the Rules

Nobody does bullshit better than us. Right?

The Bible, a book revered by many, presents a picture of God as the ultimate authority, the source of all morality. Yet, a closer look reveals a disturbing pattern: God, the supposed author of the Ten Commandments, frequently appears to break the very rules he laid down for humanity. Let’s delve into a few glaring examples:

1. Thou Shalt Not Kill:

  • The Flood: God, in a fit of rage over humanity’s wickedness, orders a global flood, drowning millions of innocent men, women, children, and animals. This act of mass murder seems to directly contradict the commandment “Thou shalt not kill.”
  • The Conquest of Canaan: God repeatedly commands the Israelites to utterly destroy their enemies, including women, children, and livestock. This amounts to genocide, a blatant violation of the commandment against killing.

2. Thou Shalt Not Steal:

  • The Exodus: God commands the Israelites to leave Egypt, taking with them the gold and silver of their former masters. This act of mass theft, while presented as divine retribution, hardly aligns with the commandment against stealing.

3. Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness:

  • Deception and Manipulation: Throughout the Old Testament, God frequently employs deception and manipulation to achieve his goals. He hardens Pharaoh’s heart, leading to further suffering for the Egyptians, and manipulates events to suit his own purposes. These actions hardly exemplify truthfulness and honesty.

4. Thou Shalt Not Covet:

  • God’s Jealousy: The Old Testament portrays a jealous God who demands exclusive worship and threatens retribution against those who worship other deities. This jealousy, while often attributed to God’s love, seems to contradict the commandment against coveting.

The Divine Paradox

These are just a few examples of the many instances where God, as depicted in the Bible, appears to act in ways that directly contradict the moral code he supposedly established. This raises some serious questions:

  • Is God above the laws he created for humanity?
  • If God can break his own rules, what moral authority does he hold over us?
  • Does this suggest a flawed or hypocritical deity?

Of course, religious apologists will offer explanations and justifications for these apparent contradictions. They may argue that God’s actions are beyond human comprehension, or that his judgments are always just and merciful.

However, for the unbiased observer, these explanations often ring hollow. The Bible, rather than presenting a consistent and compassionate deity, often depicts a capricious and even cruel figure who seems to operate by a different set of rules than the ones he imposes on humanity.

As an ex-Christian, I find myself hating the idea of God... any god more and more. I've come to realize that if God existed in any capacity, then he is an asshole: plain and simple.
